The position is M-F 9:00am-5:30pm, with the option of second shift 10:30pm-7:00am.
Perform complex technical work involving cytogenetic analysis of human biological material. Job duties will involve tissue culture on a range of human tissues and analysis using a conventional light microscope, digital imaging, and molecular cytogenetic techniques. Staff at this level must have at least two years of experience in a cytogenetics laboratory or three years of general laboratory experience with a minimum of one year with relevant experience of specialty. ASCP Certification in Cytogenetics is preferred. This is a Monday through Friday position with Saturday/Sunday rotation.
A Medical Laboratory Scientist is expected to perform independently, with minimal supervision in most areas of the laboratory. Training will be provided in deficient areas for less experienced appointees.
Short and long-term tissue culture on blood, bone marrow, amniotic fluid, products of conception, skin, and solid tumor specimens.
Harvesting of cultures, slide preparation, and staining.
Microscope analysis of cytogenetic preparations. Bone marrow microscopy experience is preferred.
Karyotype preparation using the Applied Spectral Imaging System.
Interact with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals, answer questions within the scope of personal competence and refer queries to appropriate senior staff.
Participate in proficiency testing.
Attend staff meetings, continuing education, safety, and compliance training. Remain current on standard operating procedures by reviewing and signing the laboratory manual annually.
Follow departmental and DUHS policies and procedures such as attendance and time reporting policies.
Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.
Cover emergency and non-emergency out of hours work as required.
Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Generalist certification required for General labs. Generalist/Specialty certification required for specialty labs.
Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification
The registry is eligible. Generalist/Specialty Certification by a nationally recognized board/agency (required within 18 months of hire).
Certification will vary depending on the laboratory.
Advanced degree (MS or higher) accepted in lieu of certification.
