The James J Peters VAMC is seeking a Deputy Chief of Staff who possess the leadership, energy, compassion, and commitment to serve those who serve our Country. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: The preferred candidate will be an MD or DO, Internal Medicine Physician or Specialist as well as meet the preferred experience below: Knowledge of the VA system and its regulations Knowledge of patient care processes and systems Demonstrated commitment to an interdisciplinary approach to care Documented ability to coordinate a broad continuum of programs Progressive management experience with strong administrative and interpersonal skills Demonstrated skills in maintaining and enhancing partnerships with academic affiliates and other key stakeholders. Physical Requirements: Light lifting (under 15 lbs), light carrying (under 15 lbs), use of fingers, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20 and 20/40 in the other, hearing (aid permitted), emotional stability, mental stability. ["The Deputy Chief of Staff (DCOS) is a key advisor to the Chief of Staff and Director of clinical issues and assists in the administration and oversight of clinical, educational and research programs. The DCOS will provide support over Quality Improvement initiatives; working with the clinical service chiefs and performance measure champions to improve processes to meet the performance measure goals (SAIL/EPRP) and improve utilization management; reviewing requests and determining the best way to obtain the required resources. The incumbent maintains a professional and effective working relationship and affiliation with educational institutions, healthcare, organizations, and veteran's services organizations.\nDCOS establishes a collaborative climate among all Service Lines that promotes optimum access, employee engagement, a high-performance network, and best practices. The incumbent reports to the COS and in his/her absence will be Acting COS.\nEffective written and oral communication and interpersonal skills are required. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Balancing the duties of a physician with that of an administrator. Develop and maintain currently accepted management practices throughout the clinical services. Assist and presents the budgetary requirements of the clinical services and assists in the formulation of the annual budget program. Responsible to the COS for programs of patient care and for the educational and research activities of the clinical services. Formulates and recommends plans for a comprehensive program of medical care, Appraises the effectiveness of the various medical programs in meeting the needs of patient Act as mentors to physicians and medical staff Keeping staff updated on new healthcare regulations.
