The new state of the art Banner Ocotillo Medical Center is located on the southeast corner of Alma School Road and Loop 202 Santan Freeway. It is a four story, 245,000 square foot comprehensive medical care center situated on an 18-acre campus. We are a 96 bed facility with room for expansion utilizing innovative technology to provide excellent inpatient and outpatient care, services include imaging, surgery, labor and delivery, intensive care and emergency room services.
POSITION SUMMARY
This position, under the direct supervision of an RN, will allow the nursing student / new graduate nurse the ability to expand their clinical experience while working through standard RN competency assessments on a wide variety of patient care activities, which include classroom training, participation in patient care planning, implementation, observation and evaluation, as well as reporting significant observations to the RN.
CORE FUNCTIONS
1. Assists direct caregiver in the assessment, planning, diagnosis, implementation, evaluation and nursing care and reports patient status to a professional registered nurse.
2. Participates with other disciplines in the planning, implementation, evaluation and modification of nursing care and provides direct nursing care under the direct supervisor of a licensed professional registered nurse.
3. Performs nursing procedures for which competency has been established under the direct supervision of a licensed professional registered nurse.
4. The unlicensed Nurse Extern must have received didactic and clinical instruction in IV therapy to participate in aspects of IV therapy. Unlicensed Nurse Externs may participate in the provision of the following aspects of IV therapy including peripheral-short IV insertion with the use of saline flushes, changing IV dressings and discontinuation of peripheral-short IV???s under the direct observation and supervision of an RN.
5. The unlicensed Nurse Extern, under the direct supervision of an RN, may perform other nursing skills for which they have received didactic and clinical instruction in their program including oxygen therapy
6. The licensed Nurse Extern may participate in nursing activities and procedures as allowed by the practice and scope of the nursing license held while pending transfer to the RN role
7. Follows safety standards in all aspects of performance of the above functions, reports/removes equipment and attends safety education sessions.
8. Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Banner Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.
9. Interacts with all levels of staff in a variety of departments, physicians, patients, families and external contacts, such as employees of other health care institutions, community providers and agencies, concerning the health care of the patient. Scope of responsibility is defined by the Nursing Extern???s preceptor.

Able to stand, walk, bend, squat, reach, and stretch frequently.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Must be enrolled in an accredited nursing program and must be within 1 year of graduation. Demonstrates behaviors, which are consistent with Banner Core Behaviors.
Must be able to use critical thinking and problem-solving skills and analyze complex data.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
